The Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, Wera Hobhouse, has called out recent attacks by the Conservative government on the democratic system in a speech. The EU withdrawal bill and other legislation is threatening the role of parliament and betraying voters.
Last week, millions will have been horrified at the Conservatives’ attacks on our democracy.
On Monday I spoke up in a debate on the EU Withdrawal Bill, which plans to give Government Ministers the power to make, amend, or repeal any law, by decree, with little or no Parliamentary scrutiny.
The government is trying to use parliamentary processes to prevent Parliament having a say on how Brexit is carried out. As I said in my speech, the bill adds another level of madness to the Brexit process, not only betraying those who voted to remain in the EU, but also those who chose to leave.
As the MP for Bath I have fought against these attacks on our democracy. I will not sit idly by as this government tries to erode our rights and changes our laws behind closed doors.
On Tuesday, the Conservatives also voted through changes to the rules on membership of public bill committees. This gives the government the means to force through legislation on Brexit and other matters without proper scrutiny.
The Conservatives did not win a majority at the election, but are now hijacking parliament to try and impose their extreme Brexit on the country. They are using all means possible to circumvent parliamentary democracy and guarantee committees will rubber stamp government decisions at all costs.
I don’t believe this is how government should be run. The Liberal Democrat position remains clear. The British people should be allowed to have the final say on the Brexit deal.
