We host a variety of events throughout the year to suit all ages and levels of involvement in the party. From our regular Politics and A Pint event, which provides new members and those thinking of joining a great opportunity to meet like-minded people to quizzes, fundraisers, BBQs and so much more! This is also where we promote Action Days, hustings and other campaigning events.

Do you have an idea for an event you think we should put on? Or would you like to get involved in organising events. Then get in touch with our events team at [email protected]

    Why "Make Votes Matter" matters

Most Liberal Democrats agree voting reform is a key issue, but questions remain. Could or should an active Lib Dem campaign for PR fill the void left by the Stop Brexit movement and what would this involve?

Helen Belcher,  a speaker for Make Votes Matter, addresses this issue and will answer your questions on PR at an hour long Zoom event.

Helen was the Lib Dem candidate in the neighbouring seat of Chippenham in both 2017, where she held on to second place, and in 2019 when considerably improved on her position. She has campaigned in Bath on many occasions. She also works with a number of Lib Dem MPs and peers on equality and diversity issues, as well as being an approved party trainer. She has been interested in better voting systems for 40 years, and has been involved with Make Votes Matter for the last five. She lives in Corsham, where she is a town councillor, and theoretically is part-retired, although she is still busy despite the closure of her fledgling B&B business.

Lord Jonathan Oates: From Teenage Runaway to the House of Lords, via Africa

Lord Jonathan Oates, Liberal Democrat Peer, on his memoir: I Never Promised You a Rose Garden

'Aged fifteen and armed with a credit card stolen from his father, Jonny ran away from home and boarded a plane bound for Addis Ababa. His plan? To single-handedly save the Ethiopian people from the devastating 1985 famine. Discovering on arrival that the demand for the assistance of fifteen-year-old English boys was limited, he learned the hard lesson that you can’t change the world just by force of will.'

Jonny’s story charts his path through troubled teenage years, first to Ethiopia, then teaching in Zimbabwe, to post-apartheid politics in South Africa, and ultimately to the roller-coaster ride of Britain’s first post-war coalition government, where he played a key role in the struggle for his own country’s future and learns important lessons about the difference between power and duty.

Jonny was Liberal Democrats Communications Director for the 2010 General Election Campaign and Chief of Staff for Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, 2010-15, after which he took a seat in the House of Lords. He is our spokesperson on Climate Change, and also focusses on International Development and Mental Health.

This is a Fundraising Event for Members and Guests. Please give what you can.
