Leading the UK in Climate and Nature Action
Following the action taken by the Liberal Democrats over the past four years, B&NES is now recognised as a national leader in climate action. We are the first council in England to introduce a net-zero policy for all new housing developments. We doubled the renewable generation capacity, introduced the first paying Clean Air Zone outside London, achieved record-breaking recycling rates and are on track to plant 100,000 trees as part of our integrated campaign to enhance biodiversity and carbon sequestration. We will continue to embed the Climate and Ecological emergencies at the heart of all our thinking and policy making by:
-
Promoting carbon literacy and climate action awareness at every level across our communities.
-
Monitoring and communicating progress on key metrics of our progress towards our Net Zero 2030 goal.
-
Actively supporting the growth of powerful green economic regeneration.
-
Maximising renewable energy generation on Council owned property and land.
-
Promoting the growth of local community energy partners.
-
Reaching enough installed renewable energy capacity across the district by 2025 to meet the needs of 48,000 households.
-
Further increasing our already record-breaking recycling rates.
-
Keeping Midland Road Household Waste and Recycling Centre open until a like-for-like facility has opened in Bath.
-
Pressing ever harder for zero carbon new-build.
-
Pushing the planning system to facilitate effective retro-fitting of energy efficiency measures, including in listed buildings.
-
Doubling tree coverage by 2050 and supporting the creation of a brand new community woodland.
-
Redoubling our efforts to oppose further expansion of Bristol Airport.
-
Championing local food resilience and encouraging more local food production, including in private gardens.
-
Maintaining and developing green corridors and protecting the Green Belt areas from gratuitous or unwarranted development.
