Letter: Should Remain campaigners give up?

This letter, from Councillor Dine Romero, was originally published in The Bath Chronicle on 11 August 2016.

No, definitely not.

Despite many of the comments in last week’s Talking Points, pro-EU supporters have more reason than ever to continue fighting for Britain’s place in Europe.

After an election, the losing side doesn’t just shut up and do nothing till the next election comes around. They carry on campaigning, holding the government to account, and arguing for the policies they believe are in the best interests of constituents.

We still believe it is in the best interests of this country to stay in the EU and we are continuing to campaign for that policy. Let’s not forget that 58% of voters across B&NES, and even more in Bath, agree.

What is more, polls have shown that many of those who voted for Brexit now have regrets as the deceptions of the Leave campaign are brought to light and the lack of a clear way forward damages the economy.

No-one believes that the Leave side would have stopped campaigning if Remain had won in June – after all, they didn’t stop after they lost the 1975 referendum – and neither will we!

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Dine Romero

Bath and North East Somerset Councillor for Southdown
