Reprieve for ‘Vegmead’

Last month we shared news of the campaign to save the ‘Vegmead’ community garden. Councillor Lisa Brett backed local residents in their campaign to stop the Council moving them out of Hedgemead Park.

At the September Cabinet meeting, Lisa questioned the Cabinet member for Community Services about his plans for Hedgemead and Vegmead. Here is his response:

"When officers visited the site earlier in the year, the area appeared to be largely abandoned and not a particularly suitable location. However I am pleased that the community has confirmed that it can commit to maintaining the site. We will therefore work with the community to establish agreed standards, as part of our comprehensive management plan for Hedgemead Park. If the site proves to be a success then that will be a great result – if not we can review in 12 months’ time and look at other options with the community then."

Lisa Brett commented:

“I’m very glad to hear that Vegmead has a reprieve and local residents will be able to continue gardening next year."

"This is a sensible decision by the Cabinet member.”
