Fair fares for Ralph Allen students

Cllrs Kevin Guy and Sarah Warren are petitioning Helen Godwin the WECA mayor to extend £1 bus fares for students getting buses to Ralph Allen school.

While the Mayor’s children’s £1 bus fare cap has helped many families with the cost of travel, it does not currently apply to the X86 and 228 services used by many pupils travelling from the east of Bath. As a result, children on these routes can pay up to £18.50 a week for school travel, with some families facing annual costs of more than £700 per child.

Working with local parents and campaigners, the Lib Dems are calling on the West of England Mayor, Helen Godwin, to bring fares on these routes into line with the scheme available elsewhere in the region.

Cllr Kevin Guy said: “The £1 fare cap has made a real difference for families across our region. It’s only fair that children travelling to Ralph Allen School can benefit from the same support.”

Cllr Sarah Warren added: “Families should not face higher costs simply because of the bus route they rely on. Extending the scheme would help parents and encourage more sustainable journeys to school.”

Your councillors have launched a petition calling on the Mayor to extend the £1 child fare cap to the X86 and 228 services, with campaigners hoping to present it to the West of England Combined Authority in early 2027.
